Description
The Statue of Diana at Shrubland Hall is an early 19th-century statue accompanied by a balustrade made of artificial stone or cement. It is located at the end of Brownslow Terrace, which runs north from the Hall through an avenue of ancient sweet chestnut trees.
The statue serves as the focal point of a classical-style balustrade that forms the outer edge of the building's shallow, semicircular base. It is mounted on a centrally placed, square, panelled plinth and depicts Diana springing forward, taking an arrow from the quiver on her right shoulder while grasping a stag by the horns. She is dressed in a knee-length tunic, sandals, and a tiara-crown.
The balustrade features half-balusters and ends with square panelled plinths that support urns decorated with gadrooning. The face of the plinths, positioned at right angles to the balustrade, displays an elaborate scroll adorned with acanthus leaves and resting on a clawed foot.
Currently, the statue is overgrown with ivy and vegetation, and some parts of the balustrade are broken and missing.
