Description
The bridge in the 'wild garden' at Shrubland Hall was built between 1855 and 1858. It is constructed from coursed and squared limestone rubble. The bridge spans a chasm located to the west of the Loggia and Panel Garden.
The substantial structure features a semicircular single span. Large blocks of stone with chisel-draughted margins alternate with prominent voussoirs that project beyond the archway, while the stones of the soffit have a punched finish. The bridge is equipped with a low parapet topped by six large plain piers made of roughly finished artificial stone, through which a wooden handrail is threaded. The piers at either end have flat square caps.
