Description
The dovecote located 60 metres east of Badley Hall dates back to the 16th century. It has a square plan measuring about 5 meters on each side and is constructed from timber framing with plaster. The roof is a pyramid shape, covered with plain tiles, and features opposing gablets, with the western gablet being weatherboarded. On the west side, there are a pair of stable doors from the 18th or 19th century.
The walls are lined with thick oak planks that are set axially and rise about 5 meters from the ground to the wallplate. These planks are spaced approximately 300 to 500 millimeters apart and are drilled for dowels, some of which remain, that originally supported the nests. The external face of the dovecote was originally plastered, and some early plaster work still exists, along with some infilling and repairs made with narrow 17th-century red bricks. Although the structure is largely intact, the potence is missing. This dovecote is a rare surviving example of a 16th-century timber-framed structure in Suffolk.
