Description
11 Hawksmill Street is a significant remnant of a Wealden house dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with later alterations made in the 16th century. The building has two storeys and features a timber-framed structure that is plastered over a painted brick plinth. The upper floor juts out towards the street, which is a modification from the late 16th century. It has a plaintiled roof with an internal end chimney made of red brick.
The ground floor has mid-19th century sash windows, while the upper storey contains three-light leaded casements from the 18th or early 19th century. The entrance door, which dates from the 19th century, has six panels with the upper panels being glazed. The roof remains undisturbed and smoke-encrusted, showcasing an open truss with a plain square crown-post. The cambered tie-beam once featured large arch-braces.
The left-hand bay of the building has been truncated, and a likely storeyed cell to the left has also been demolished. In the late 16th century, the front wall was rebuilt to include the inserted jettied upper floor. In the 19th century, this building was part of The Queens Head Inn, along with Nos. 13 and 15 Hawksmill Street.
