Description

The Mutton is a house, formerly known as the public house The Shoulder of Mutton, dating from the early 18th century with later alterations from the late 18th and 19th centuries. It has two storeys and a three-cell plan, constructed from timber framing and plaster. The roof is plaintiled with a central red brick chimney. The building features mainly 18th-century three-light casement windows, some of which have transoms, and 19th-century boarded entrance doors.

Although the current structure appears to have been built after 1700, most of its main components come from a demolished 16th-century building, which originally had diamond-mullioned windows and a crownpost roof. The first-floor structure over the hall is made of substantial 16th-century joists, and the cambered lintel above the wide hall fireplace is also from the 16th century. The remaining 18th-century work includes slender joists and straight primary-based walling. In the late 18th century, the service end to the right was extended by one bay. In the 19th century, an outshut was added to the left, along with a small wing at the rear. Historical documents from around 1630 mention a house on this site, originally known as Armigers, which became a public house around 1770.
