Description

The Church of St Peter is a medieval parish church located in Creeting St. Peter. It features a nave, chancel, west tower, south porch, and north vestry. The building is constructed of flint rubble with freestone dressings, and the nave is largely plastered, retaining some medieval plaster on the north side. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and the nave has 19th-century fleur-de-lys ridge finials. The tower roof is flat and is set behind embattled parapets.

The church includes areas of Norman flint walling, with a chamfered round-arched north doorway that has a 14th or 15th-century plank door. The chancel showcases much plain early 14th-century work, including a pointed south doorway, a three-light intersecting traceried east window, a simple pointed piscina, and ogee-headed side windows. Later 14th-century features include the tower with a double-chamfered west doorway, two-light belfry windows, and lion-head gargoyles. The nave has side windows, a south porch, and a south doorway with a plank door and ironmongery, along with a tower doorway and door. The late 15th-century nave side windows and chancel arch have moulded shafts.

Inside, there is a restored 16th-century pulpit, which is unusually seven-sided and enriched with tracery and twin crocketted pinnacles. The church also contains a finely carved 15th-century octagonal limestone font, featuring angels beneath the bowl and lions supporting the stem. A notable 15th-century wall painting of St. Christopher can be found on the north nave wall, complete with an inscription and a broad border of red, white, and blue. The vestry has been almost entirely rebuilt in the 19th century, but it retains a window that may date back to the 14th century. The 19th-century roofs in the chancel feature scissor-braced coupled rafters, while the nave has arch-braced collar beam trusses.
