Description

West End Farmhouse is a farmhouse with an early 16th century core that has undergone significant alterations, mainly in the early 19th century. It features a three-cell plan, with an original but concealed cross-wing at the right-hand end. The building has two storeys and one storey with attics. It is timber-framed and encased in 19th and mid-20th century gault brick. The roof is partly covered with plain tiles, while the low-pitched 19th century section is slated, and the steep rear slope is concrete tiled.

There are two axial chimneys made of red brick; one shaft was rebuilt in the 20th century using gault brick, and the other remains in red brick. The farmhouse has early 19th century small-pane sash windows and a 19th century entrance door with six panels, topped by a Doric portico porch featuring a flat entablature supported by columns.

To the right, there is an early 16th century wing with heavy, mostly concealed framing, unchamfered floor joists, and a clasped purlin roof, along with an inserted 17th century chimney. The complete 16th century service cell to the left has massive floor joists and tension-braced studding. The farmhouse is included in the listing despite the 19th and 20th century alterations due to its significant 16th century features. It is also associated with a medieval moat that has been partially infilled.
