Description

This is an early 15th-century house with alterations from the 17th century and around 1970. The building comprises a 3-bay 15th-century service cross-wing and a truncated 17th-century hall range to the right. It is timber-framed and plastered, with a Roman pantiled roof that was originally thatched. Red brick axial and external chimneys are present. The windows are largely 20th-century casements, and there is a gabled entrance porch with a boarded door.

The cross-wing includes twin service rooms on the ground floor, with a solar above spanning three bays. The timber framing is plain, and evidence remains of a coupled-rafter roof, diamond-mullioned windows, and a jettied upper floor at the front. A 2-centred arched doorway served as a service room entrance and was originally one of a pair. The open hall was demolished, and a range was built further back in the 17th century, featuring a large axial chimney. The building underwent significant remodelling around 1970. Records indicate that in 1408, John Upston held a tenement in Stonham Aspal called Symonds.
