Description

The walled garden, located 370 meters south of Stowlangtoft Hall, dates back to 1829. It features red brick walls approximately 3.5 meters high, with the upper section tapering in thickness and supported by pilasters at intervals. The walls have weathered stone and clay copings and measure about 85 by 30 meters. Lean-to greenhouses, each about 40 meters long, are attached to the south side of both the north and south walls, although they are in poor condition at the time of the survey. There are doorways with cambered heads and boarded doors at the center of three sides, and above the north doorway is a small limestone block inscribed with the date 1829. Slated lean-to sheds, also in poor condition, are attached to the south and west walls. Most of the west wall was reportedly rebuilt in 1862, as indicated by numerals of flint and the initials HW in terracotta. This section contains a significant collection of architectural fragments from various periods, including a wrought iron tie rod with a bar inscribed "W 1664 D," which are the initials of Sir Willoughby D'Ewes, who died in 1685. Many of the fragments are made of limestone and feature fine 14th and 15th-century carvings, while others include sections of 16th-century terracotta window mullions and finials or chimney shafts, likely originating from the nearby Stowlangtoft Hall, which was demolished in the 19th century. At the center of the south wall, there is a raised section with limestone-capped brick piers and a weather vane on a limestone plinth.
