Description

Ash Tree Farm House is a farmhouse that was later divided into two dwellings. It dates from the early 17th century and underwent alterations and partial reroofing in the 20th century. The building features timber frames that are plastered, with steeply pitched roofs covered in machine tiles and plain tiles.

The main range consists of three cells and was originally designed with a unit house and dairy wing that also has three cells, arranged around a cross passage plan. The building is two storeys high. The entrance to the main range is now located to the right, between the hall and service bays, and features an architraved panelled door with an open gabled porch and three-light casements. There is a ridge stack located between the hall and parlour, which has a rebuilt cap, and an external stack added to the right end. The rear right wing, which is the unit house/dairy wing, has slightly lower eaves and ridge, with a blocked cross passage entrance towards the front and a ridge stack towards the rear. The rear gable end reveals exposed plates and purlins.

Inside, the hall includes a stop-chamfered cross axial binding beam and joists, while the parlour features a stop-chamfered axial binding beam and joists, with close studding, chamfered mid rails, and four-light cavetto mullioned window openings. The parlour also has a depressed brick arched fireplace. On the first floor, there are arched braces in the walling, three and five-light diamond mullioned window openings, and over the parlour, cranked braces in the walling along with a chamfered four-centred brick arched fireplace. The roof was reroofed in the 20th century. The rear wing displays close studding, cross passage doorways, a stop-chamfered cross axial binding beam, and cambered tie beams supporting the side purlin roof, which features arched windbraces. The site is partly moated.
