Description

Nos. 17 and 18 on King William Street are two houses, likely built as one in the 18th century, with a 16th-century wing at the rear of No. 17. The buildings are two storeys tall, with the rear wing being one storey with attics. They are timber-framed and plastered, featuring some 18th-century plasterwork with roughcast panels outlined in smooth plaster, primarily on the upper storey. The roof is made of concrete plaintiles, with old clay plaintiles at the rear, and there are red brick chimneys at the ends and rear.

At the first storey, No. 17 has small-pane late 18th-century sash windows, while the ground storey features a splayed cantilevered bay with small panes, designed in a 20th-century style that mimics the 18th century. The entrance door is four-panelled, with the upper panels being glazed. A wide 20th-century recess in the facade provides access to the doorways of Nos. 19 and 21.

The rear wing of No. 17 displays good close-studding, a coupled-rafter roof, lodged upper floor joists, and evidence of diamond-mullioned windows. There is a wide open fireplace with a truncated cambered lintel. The front range was rebuilt in the 18th century using many reused components from an earlier structure. No. 19 currently serves as a store on the ground storey and a bedroom above, both occupied by No. 21 but structurally part of No. 17.
