Description

The Old Bakery is a house that originally dates back to the 16th century, though it has been largely rebuilt and extended in the early 18th century, with further extensions in the 19th century and alterations in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is plastered, with some brick casing, and has pantiled roofs that are steeply pitched on the earlier sections.

The structure consists of a two-bay core, with a kitchen bay added at right angles to form a small L shape, all of which is one storey with an attic. To the left, there are 19th-century bakery outbuildings that are also one storey. The original left bay has a three-light glazing bar casement, and between the two early bays, there is a cross axial red brick ridge stack with a rebuilt cap. The projecting kitchen bay on the right has slightly higher eaves and features an inner return three-light glazing bar casement, a gabled dormer, and an internal axial end stack, along with a brick outshut to the front that was raised in the 20th century.

The bakery to the left includes a door and a three-light window, with a shallow pitch to the roof and a brick end wall. The original right gable end displays a pentice board, along with exposed plates and purlins. At the rear, there is an entrance to the left, a gabled dormer, and a brick structure from the 19th century that has a truncated stack.

Inside, the original right end retains jowled posts, studding, and rafters of large scantling, while the rest of the frame consists of small scantling with a forked axial binding beam. There is also a repositioned mullioned window featuring a hollow moulded and chamfered king mullion, flanked by small diamond mullions.
