Description

This is a row of three blocks of brick houses built in the early to mid-19th century on the west side of Berners Street. The houses are constructed of grey gault brick, some of which has been painted. They are three storeys high and have 6-, 6-, and 4-window ranges, each with double-hung sash windows featuring glazing bars in plain reveals. The windows are topped with stucco cornice lintels supported on brackets. Portions of the houses containing doorways and one window above project slightly, with a stucco cornice running between the first and second storeys. Pilasters divide the houses. The doorways for numbers 31 to 35 have stucco pilasters, a frieze and a cornice. Numbers 37 and 39 feature Ionic porches supported by fluted columns, while numbers 41 and 43 (now the Carlton Hotel) have 20th-century doorways. The roofs are slate. These houses form a group with numbers 25 to 89 (odd), 32 to 84 (even), and 90 and 92.
