Description
No 57 on Fore Street is a warehouse that has been converted into offices. It dates from the 15th to 16th century and was dismantled in 1982 before being re-erected on this site between 1989 and 1990. The building features a timber-frame structure with brick and stucco, and an L-shaped roof covered with 20th-century tiles and slates. It has two storeys and a three-window range, with six windows on the ground floor and an entrance located at the rear. Inside, the warehouse retains six bays of framing in the longer wing and four bays in the shorter wing. The first floor and roof are mostly intact, with wall posts partially surviving to the ground floor. The building showcases close studding with tension braces and ties, as well as curved braces. The roof has a single tier of purlins with curved windbraces, collars, and coupled rafters. This structure is a very rare example of a warehouse from Ipswich.
