Description

The Church of St Mary, also known as the Church of the Holy Cross, is a Grade I listed building located on St Mary's Street in Bungay. This church was formerly attached to a Benedictine convent, the ruins of which can still be seen on the east side of the church. The church suffered damage from a fire in 1688, which affected the older structure. The North Porch dates back to 1309, while the north aisle is from the early 15th century. The south aisle roof was burned in the fire and was re-roofed in 1699, as noted on a rafter, with the church reopening in 1701. Notably, there is no chancel in this church. The nave and the tower both date from the 15th century.
