Description

No. 11 Theatre Street is a 16th-century building, originally a residence associated with a Free School founded between 1577 and 1585. Prior to that, it may have served as a Guildhall. Records indicate a Master named Parklyfe in 1595, and an entry for Charles Reeve in 1589, linked to Woodbridge School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. The endowment for the school came from Thomas Annot of Lowestoft. The property was briefly lost to Woodbridge in 1607, but returned in 1668 and then used as a workhouse. The building is two storeys and has an attic with a gable window, boarded up on the first floor. It features an overhanging upper storey and a former carriageway entrance. Originally half-timbered, the exterior is now plastered, retaining a carved corner post and four pendent four-centred arches carved into the bressumer. It has three sash windows in flush frames, one casement window, and two four-panel doors. The building forms a group with Nos. 7 to 13.
