Description
The building is a former First World War air raid shelter located at the rear of 8 Bredfield Road in Woodbridge, constructed around 1915 by William Marjoram.
It is made of concrete, with the entrance chamber featuring knapped flint and a concrete tile roof. The above-ground entrance chamber is rectangular and aligned from north-east to south-west, while the underground shelter has a cylindrical shape.
The exterior of the entrance chamber resembles a gabled outbuilding, with concrete quoins on the knapped flint walls and a deep concrete-coped gable on the roof. The entrance, located in the north-east gable end wall, consists of a wooden door beneath a triangular-pedimented concrete hood.
Above the dome of the shelter, the ground is raised about 1 metre above the surrounding surface, reinforced with concrete and masonry blocks, along with concrete kerb edging. A chimney pot filled with concrete sits on this raised area, hiding a cast-iron downpipe that served as a ventilation duct. Another cast-iron downpipe, also used for ventilation, is positioned at the north-north-west edge of the raised ground.
Inside, a small hole in the entrance chamber floor leads to a thirteen-step spiral staircase that descends into a narrow tunnel measuring 1.2 metres long, 0.9 metres high, and 0.5 metres wide. This tunnel connects to the cylindrical shelter, which has a domed roof with a maximum height of 2.7 metres at the center. The shelter's walls are made of curved concrete blocks, and there is a bench seat running around its circumference. Additionally, scriptures from the Old Testament are etched into the concrete walls of the entrance chamber and one row of blocks within the shelter.
