Description

Melton Grange Hotel is a large house that has been converted into a hotel. It was built in 1898, although it likely has origins dating back to the 18th century. The hotel was commissioned by Major J.E.W. Howey. The structure is made of red brick with slate roofs that are topped with battlements. It features elaborate stone and terracotta decorations, along with various moulded brick stacks that have decorative multiple flues. The design is in the Jacobethan Renaissance style and consists of two storeys.

The long main facade showcases stone and brick mullion and transom windows. Notable features include a canted polygonal two-storey bay on the left, a projecting gable with a shaped outline that incorporates terracotta panels displaying the date 1898, a set-back staircase window adorned with stonework panels carved with putti and strap-work, and a canted entrance bay with a double-leaved door accessed by steps, topped with an elaborate frontispiece. There are extensions to the far right and rear that date from the 20th century, but they may include earlier elements.

Inside, the staircase hall is partly panelled and features an open-well staircase with a turned balustrade, a carved frieze, and a wooden chimneypiece with fluted pilasters. The southern room, which has a corner turret, boasts an elaborately plastered ceiling, a frieze, and a central beam supported by columns on scrolled brackets. It also contains two plastered chimneypieces within niches framed by pilasters on scrolled brackets. The northern room has a deep beamed ceiling, a panelled dado, and a tall wooden inglenook fireplace with Ionic columns. The western range features a cast iron staircase with bamboo detailed balusters. The first-floor southern room has a stair leading to the roof of the corner turret.

Overall, Melton Grange Hotel is a large and intricately detailed house that displays features typical of earlier Suffolk buildings.
