Description

1-5 Quay Side is a building dating to the 16th century, originally the Ship Inn. It is two storeys and has an attic, with one gable-end window and two dormers. The building is timber framed, with the first floor overhanging at numbers 1 and 3. Number 5 has a gabled appearance. The external walls are now roughcast rendered, with a visible brick chimney and tiled roof. There are seven windows; some are early casements, others are mullion and transom windows, and one is a sash window on the ground floor. A single original window remains at the rear. A staircase features early shaped flat balusters. A fine ribbed geometrical ceiling can be found within number 1. A room in the building served as the meeting place for the first Independent Chapel in the 17th century.
