Description

St. Bartholomew's Church is a 14th-century church located on Orford High Street. It features a nave and aisles, along with a south doorway in the porch. The tower was restored in 1830, with further restorations to the north aisle and nave occurring between 1897 and 1900. The tower underwent another restoration in 1971. The ruined north chancel dates back to the late Norman period, beginning around 1166. The church is constructed from a mixture of stone rubble and flint, topped with copper roofs.

The tower has diagonal stepped buttresses, and the aisle windows consist of three lights with reticulated tracery. The south porch displays spandrels adorned with shields representing the emblems of the Passion and Trinity. The west tower features an original 14th-century doorway with two orders of thin shafts and numerous continuous mouldings, topped by a three-light window with flowing tracery.

Inside, the church has quatrefoil piers with spurs in the diagonals, and the arches are detailed with thin filleted rolls and a large sunk quadrant. The tower arch is similarly designed. A 14th-century font sits on a two-stepped base, decorated with four lions and four wild men, and the bowl is supported by angels' heads. There are two reset parclose screens on the north and south sides of the high altar. The church also houses two paintings: one of the Holy Family with St. John by Bernardino Luini, dated around 1520, and another nativity scene by Rafailino del Colle. Additionally, there are many brasses dating from the 15th to the 17th centuries, and three bells from the 17th to 18th centuries are now located at floor level. A 19th-century rood screen is also present.
