Description
North Cove Hall is a house built between 1760 and 1770, with earlier work likely dating back to the 17th century at the rear. The building is constructed of red brick and features a roof made of glazed black pantiles, hipped on the front range and with a three-span roof at the rear, where the central portion is less steeply pitched and probably of a later date. The front range has two storeys and an attic, while the rear has three storeys and attics.
The facade has five bays with a flat parapet that wraps around the sides. The center bay is slightly set forward and includes a pediment within the parapet. The windows are inset sash types with glazing bars, set under flat brick arches, and the central window is tripartite with a cornice above. The entrance features a half-glazed door with lower raised and fielded panels, a rectangular fanlight with glazing bars, and panelled reveals, all sheltered by a Roman Doric porch supported by square columns.
There are two pedimented dormers on the front and one segmental-headed dormer on each side. Later additions include single-storey wings, each with one sash window and flanking triple-arcaded screen walls topped with stone vases. Inside, there is a notable main staircase made of oak, featuring one fluted and one twisted baluster per tread, carved tread-ends, and a ramped and wreathed handrail.
The right-hand bedroom boasts a fine Rococo plaster ceiling with a rich modillion cornice and a white marble fireplace inlaid with veined brown marble. The stairwell ceiling is adorned with an enriched cornice and a central rosette, while the left-hand bedroom is simpler, with a dentil cornice and an Adam-style fireplace. The right-hand ground floor room has a cornice with painted decoration. Additionally, the rear staircase extends to the attic and features unusual wooden balustrading designed in a Chinese lattice style.
