Description
House in the Clouds is a water tower and house built in 1923 by Frederick Forbes Glennie as part of the Thorpeness village development for Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie. The structure features a steel box frame clad with weatherboarding and has a pantiled roof. It is square in plan, with the lower stages consisting of a 5-storey tower that is accessed through an arched doorway on the south face. The windows include small single and 2-light casements set at the corners. The east and west sides have external rendered brick stacks that rise through the superstructure. The superstructure, which contains a water tank, is 2 storeys high and oversails on all sides, supported by arched corner braces. The north and south faces have one 4-light casement beneath a 3-light casement, while the east and west faces feature a canted bay window in front of the stack. The building has a gabled roof. The interior has not been inspected. This structure is a landmark and the most well-known building in the resort village. Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, the owner of the Thorpeness Estate, conceived the project, designed the village, and commissioned the architects involved.
