Description
Nos 9 and 10, The Whinlands, are a pair of houses built between 1910 and 1914 by Frederick Forbes Glennie as part of the Thorpeness village development for Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie. The houses are likely constructed from concrete block with applied weatherboarding on a brick plinth. Each house is a mirror image of the other, featuring careful asymmetry in the design. They are two storeys high with an attic and have a two-window range of square two-storey bays that extend partly above the eaves, forming porches on the ground floor. At either end of the ground floor, there are square bays that canted across the corners, created by two triangular bays. There is a larger lean-to square section at the rear on the sides, and a long six-light dormer at the front. The central ridge stack has grouped flues set diagonally. The interior has not been inspected. This pair of houses is part of a notable group located between the Ogilvie Almshouses and Westbar. Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, the owner of the Thorpeness Estate, conceived the project, designed the village layout, and commissioned the architects involved.
