Description

No. 3 Westgate is a house built between 1928 and 1929 by architect Frederick Forbes Glennie as part of the Thorpeness village development for Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie. The building features rendered and colourwashed concrete with timber framing and has plaintile roofs. It is 1-2 storeys tall and has a facade that displays a studied irregularity, consisting of two main elements.

The left element has a ground floor with a 3-light mullioned window, while the first floor is jettied and timber framed, also featuring a similar window and a gabled roof. The rear of the house is jettied at the first floor and includes a 3-light mullioned window. The remainder of the ground floor is illuminated by two 3-light mullioned windows flanking a doorway.

Two timber-framed gables rise to the second floor, with the left gable jettied on arched braces and featuring a 3-light mullioned window. The right gable is lit by a tall 3-light mullioned window with two transoms. There is an internal gable-end stack to the north and an additional ridge stack to the left of center.

Inside, the house has exposed timber framing. It is part of a notable group of buildings located between the Ogilvie Almshouses and Westbar. The project was conceived and designed by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, who sketched out the entire village and commissioned the architects involved.
