Description

Ollands and The Gables are two houses located on St John's Road, dating from 1654, as indicated by a stone tablet on the chimney. Originally one building, they are now separate.

No 51, known as Ollands, is a two-storey house with an attic, featuring a timber-framed and plastered exterior with tiles. It has four flush frame sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor, including a window above a projection with a fine porch at the ground floor and a window in the gable at the second floor. There is a modern multiple splay bay on the ground floor to the right. The oak door is original, consisting of 10 panels divided by moulded battens, set in a heavy moulded frame with an enriched stop-chamfer. The original woodcase lock, bolts, and fittings are still intact. Inside, the staircase is a fine example of the period, made of oak with turned balusters, a moulded rail, strings, and newels.

No 53, known as The Gables, has its entrance on the southeast face and is also two storeys with an attic, featuring a gable window. This house is timber-framed and plastered, with three mullion transom casement windows in a 3-2-3 light arrangement (one window is blocked but the frame is visible). The road front has two sash windows in flush frames within the gabled wing. The entrance features a six-panel door with an arched radial bar fanlight, and there is a modern bay on the ground floor. Inside, there is a good Adam type mantel.
