Description
The Matron's, Mary Warner Almshouses, and garden, built around 1860, is a single-storey warden's cottage located in Boyton. It is constructed of red Flemish bond brick and features a plain tile roof with an L-shaped plan. The south front has a central projecting gabled porchway with a round arch and kneelers supporting a shallow gablet, which displays a cross made of fired bricks. On either side of the porch are three-light cambered-headed windows. There are ridge chimney-stacks positioned slightly to the left and right of the center. The left gable end includes brick kneelers and a moulded brick coping, along with a ground floor window with two lights. At the rear left, there is a projecting gabled wing with a pantile roof and a 20th-century outshut. A brick wall, approximately 2 to 3 feet high and also in Flemish bond, connects the cottage to a rectangular walled garden and joins with the taller wall at the back of the almshouses. This building is included for its group value.
