Description
The gateway to Moat Hall, located 70 meters southeast of the hall, dates back to the early 16th century. It is constructed of red brick featuring diaper work in dark headers, with some stone used for the jambs of the arch. The gateway has a narrow four-centre arch, and on each side, there is a niche that contains a stone figure of a Wild Man or woodwose, although these figures are now in poor condition. At the top, there is a crenellated parapet with brick coping.
To the north of the gateway, there is a 40-meter length of walling that encloses the moat, which has weathered significantly over time. To the south, there is a short length of brick wall that includes some random flint and stone. Extending to the west is a 30-meter length of early 16th-century red brick walling, also with diaper work, standing approximately 3 meters high and built in English bond. At the west end of this wall, there is a small early 19th-century outbuilding that incorporates a considerable amount of re-used stonework.
