Description

Barn Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th or 16th century. It is timber-framed, with colourwashed render and a pantile roof, and has a single storey with an attic. The front of the building features a doorway located left of centre, aligned with a screens passage. To the left of the doorway is a two-light metal-framed casement window from the 20th century, which is consistent with all the windows on the property. To the right of the doorway is another similar window, and farthest to the right are French windows, with a single-light casement window slightly to their left. The attic includes three raking dormer windows, each with two lights and metal-framed casements. At the ridge on the right side, there is an axial stack with two flues. The left gable wall has a two-light window on the ground floor to the right and another two-light window on the first floor to the left, along with a single-flue brick chimney stack from the 20th century located left of centre. The rear of the building has a 20th-century outshut on the right with a flat roof and a two-light raking dormer window in the attic.

Inside, one ground floor room features a massive chamfered ceiling beam with broach stops, supported by similarly stopped wall posts. The front wall has close studding, while the rear wall was replaced in the 18th century with close studding and lengthy angle braces. There are two four-centered arched door heads; one leads to a service room beside the screens passage (now partially blocked), and the other is next to an inserted hearth. On the first floor, there is a truss that rises from the ground floor ceiling beams, which appears to be from an open hall that was altered when the upper storey was added by cutting the tie beam and raising its central portion on stilts.
