Description

Sternfield House is a house that was formerly the rectory, built in the late 18th century and significantly altered and expanded between 1964 and 1966 by Raymond Erith. The building is constructed of red brick and has a plain tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with an attic. The east facade features a five-window arrangement in a 2:1:2 pattern, with sashes that have glazing bars set in flush and cased frames, and flat brick arches above. The central doorway is adorned with pilasters and a broken pediment, and it contains a six-panel door with raised and fielded panels, topped by a semi-circular fanlight with decorative glazing bars. A brick band runs along the first floor level, and a broad wooden eaves cornice was added in the 1960s. There are three flat-roofed dormers on the hipped roof.

The south, or garden front, was remodeled in the 1960s, featuring a two-storey, three-light semi-circular bay that matches a new bay, creating a symmetrical facade. The central doorway on this front has a new semi-circular portico with paired glazed doors. The brickwork steps out at the first and second floor levels, and there is a parapet with stone coping. Additional structures were added to the west and north in the same style during the 1964-66 renovations, including a garage court with a pedimented entrance and a square clock tower on the roof.
