Description

Bye-ways is a 15th to 16th century timber-framed and plastered building located on Groton Street in Cotlee, Mittecot. It features cross wings at both the north and south ends and was originally constructed as a hall house but has since been renovated and altered into three tenements. The roof is tiled and includes a 17th-century ridge chimney stack with three diagonal shafts. The building stands two storeys high, with the upper storey of the cross wings jettied on exposed joists and supported by curved brackets. It has a one:two:one window arrangement with modern metal casements and two gabled dormers on the central block. The north wing has a rebuilt old chimney stack that originally had octagonal shafts.
