Description
The Church of St Bartholomew is a Grade I listed building located on Groton Church Street. This 15th-century structure is built from flint with stone dressings, while the lower part of the west tower dates back to the 13th century. The church underwent restoration in the 19th and 20th centuries. The west tower features diagonal buttresses and a castellated parapet with flint panel work. The nave, aisles, and south porch also have castellated parapets. The church holds significant historical interest due to its connection with the Winthrop family; John Winthrop, who died in 1649, led the Puritan emigration to New England in 1630, founded the city of Boston, and was the first governor of the state of Massachusetts, USA. It is graded for its historical importance.
