Description
Groton Hall is a 16th century and later timber-framed and plastered building located on Groton Church Street. It features cross wings at both the north and south ends, and the front was altered in the 18th century. The roof is tiled and includes a notable ridge chimney stack with four octagonal shafts that have moulded spur caps and moulded bases. The north wing extends to the west and retains the remains of a chimney stack with three hexagonal shafts. The building has two storeys and a window arrangement of one:3:1, consisting of double-hung sashes with glazing bars. There are also two six-panel doors with plain pilasters and cornices. Historically, John Winthrop held his first court as Justice of the Peace at Groton Hall in 1609. He became Lord of the Manor in 1618 and was the first Governor of Massachusetts, as well as the founder of Boston in New England in 1630.
