Description
The Church of St Mary Wiston is a small Norman church dating from the 11th century, featuring a nave and an apsidal chancel. At the west end, there is a small timber-framed belfry clad in weatherboarding topped with a pyramid roof. The church underwent restoration and alterations in 1853 and is now faced with cement. The south door showcases an 11th-century arch adorned with lattice ornamentation in the tympanum, along with a single order of shafts decorated with chevron and spiral patterns. The chancel boasts a notable 11th-century arch featuring chevron ornamentation and a single order of shafts with spiral and lattice designs. The east window includes ornamented shafts and an arch with chevron decoration, while the sanctuary is highlighted by a cross vault with a carved boss. Inside, there is a cycle of 13th-century wall paintings, much of which remains intact. The font is from the 15th century, octagonal in shape, and decorated with figures and shields. The church is recognized for its historical significance and interior features.
