Description
The tomb to Golding and Ann Constable is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary in East Bergholt. This early 19th-century chest tomb commemorates Golding Constable, who died in 1816, and his wife Ann, who died in 1815. It is made of ashlar and stands on a low splayed plinth. The tomb features a shallow pedimented cover with inscriptions dedicated to Golding and Ann, as well as inscriptions to other later family members on the sides. Golding and Ann Constable were the parents of the famous painter John Constable. Originally, the tomb was surrounded by railings. A drawing by John Constable of this tomb is reproduced in J.F. Elam's book, "St Mary's Church, East Bergholt," published in 1986.
