Description

LAVENHAM MARKET PLACE 1. 5377 (south-east side) No 26 TL 9149 50/613 23.1.53 GV 2. Owned by the National Trust. A C15 timber-framed and plastered building with a tiled roof. Two storeys. The upper storey is jettied on the front on exposed joists. In 1861 part of the ground storey at the south-west end was built out in brick (now painted) and the house was used as a chapel. The upper storey has exposed timber-framing and at the north-east end there is an enriched bressumer. The ground storey has an original mediaeval shop front (restored) with 2 arched openings and doorway, one opening has an original hinged counter board used also as a shutter. This building is said to have been at one time, an inn called the Rose and Crown. Graded as part of the Guildhall range.
