Description
26 Market Place is a Grade I listed building owned by the National Trust. This 15th-century timber-framed and plastered structure features a tiled roof and stands two storeys high. The upper storey juts out at the front, showcasing exposed joists. In 1861, part of the ground storey at the south-west end was extended in brick, which is now painted, and the building was used as a chapel. The upper storey displays exposed timber-framing, with an enriched bressumer at the north-east end. The ground storey retains an original medieval shop front, which has been restored, featuring two arched openings and a doorway; one of the openings includes an original hinged counter board that also served as a shutter. This building is believed to have once been an inn called the Rose and Crown and is graded as part of the Guildhall range.
