Description
Dakons is a house dating from the first quarter of the 16th century, with later alterations. It was built by a draper from Ipswich. The structure is timber framed and encased in brick, with the rear gable wall being a brick replacement. The house has plaintile roofs and is two storeys high, originally consisting of three cells, though it currently has two and a half.
The front gable wall features ground floor brickwork from around 1700 in a mixed bond, while the first floor and return walls are made of later brickwork. There is a three-course brick band at the first floor level of the front gable wall. The entrance consists of a boarded door located under a 20th-century porch. On the first floor, there are two casement windows under soldier arches; the left window has a single 2 x 3 pane light, and the right has two similar lights.
On the right-hand return, there are five ground floor casements with two lights each, positioned beneath brick labels at varying heights. The second from the left is likely a later addition, and the fourth bay appears to have a blocked doorway. The first floor has four 2 x 3 paned horizontal sliding sashes and casements beneath soldier arches. An external stack is located at the rear gable, and there are 20th-century additions to the left return.
Inside, the layout appears to have three and a half or four uneven bays. The front cell features a transverse beam with cavetto, roll, and cavetto mouldings, while the joists are cavetto moulded with run-out stops. The rear room, which was formerly divided into two, has partly single cavetto moulded joists, with the end bay being plain. The rear stack is made of early mixed bricks that have been reset. There is a slightly cranked arch brace at the front on the first floor, although the remaining braces have been removed. The roof has been replaced.
