Description

Newsons Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 15th century and around 1500, with alterations from the 17th and 19th to 20th centuries. It features a gault brick exterior over a timber frame, with rendered gables and a plain-tile roof that has a central brick ridge stack. The building has a two-unit plan, originally consisting of a hall with a cross-wing to the left. It stands two storeys high, with a single 20th-century two-light window on the first floor above two similar windows, and a plank door located at the far left and right. The windows have cambered lintels, and there are 20th-century windows at either end and at the rear, where there is another plank door.

Inside, the hall bay has heavy close studding framing, and there is a four-centred arched doorway in the right wall that may have led to a service bay. An open fireplace with a bressumer was likely inserted in the 17th century, and there is a massive bridging beam and joists. Curved braces are visible in the room above. The left room contains cross-beams, with the larger one featuring a wide chamfer and curved stop. Some close studding and wide joists are also visible. The room above has a cranked tie beam with curved braces, set parallel to the front, and cranked tie beams with one curved brace visible on either side of the inserted stack. The gable end walls have older framing, while the rest of the roof appears to date from the 19th or 20th century.
