Description
Numbers 138 and 140 High Street consist of a timber-framed and plastered building, likely originally a medieval hall house, that has undergone substantial alterations over time. The building features jettied cross wings at the north and south ends, supported by exposed joists. The north cross wing also has a jettied section on its north side. The upper storey of the south cross wing has exposed timber framing, and there's a further addition at the south end, also jettied with exposed timber framing on the upper storey. The central block, and the ground storey of each cross wing, are faced with painted brick. A large corner post with a moulded capital remains on the north cross wing. The roof is tiled, with a 16th to 17th century internal chimney stack to the south wing, featuring two octagonal shafts. A jettied wing extends to the rear of the property. Inside, an open truss is visible, ornamented with carved spandrels and a crown post.
