Description

Woolstaplers is an early 15th-century (or possibly 14th-century) timber-framed and plastered building with a tiled roof, originally one of the smaller Wool Halls of Lavenham. Despite considerable alterations, it remains an important building. The building comprises a main block with cross wings at the east and west ends. A second gabled wing was built onto the west side of the west wing, set at a slightly higher level, and there are later additions at both the east and west ends. It is two storeys in height. The two gabled west wings have jettied upper storeys supported on exposed joists, featuring fine 17th-century carved brackets and exposed timber framing. The ground storey of the east cross wing is underbuilt with a small, splayed bay. Most windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars; however, the jettied west wings retain casements with lattice-leaded lights. The central hall contains a crown post roof and moulded beams.
