Description

Street House is a notable 15th to 16th century timber-framed and plastered house located on Church Street in Stoke-by-Nayland. The building features two gables on the front and a gabled cross wing on the north side. The western part of the front has a jettied upper storey supported by brackets. Above the doorway, there is part of a moulded wall plate and a castellated doorhead. The house has two ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars and two doorways; one contains a six-panel door and the other a four-panel door. The roof is tiled and includes two large square chimney stacks. Inside, the house boasts carved ceiling beams with folded ribbon ornamentation and moulded beams, as well as some four-centred doorways and a 15th-century window with diamond mullions. Recent excavations beneath the 16th-century fireplace uncovered an earlier hearth likely of Norman date, and below that, an even older hearth.
