Description
Orchard Cottage is a cottage dating from the 15th or 16th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with some weatherboarding and painted brick. The roof is covered with red plain tiles and is hipped at the rear. There is a large offset red brick chimney stack on the left side. A single-storey lean-to extension, built in the 20th century, is located on the right side. The cottage was formerly jettied at the front but now has brick infill on the ground floor. It has two storeys and features a single range of 19th and 20th century casement windows, with a boarded door to the right that has a moulded surround, and a 20th century door leading to the lean-to extension.
The building consists of two bays, with large central jowled storey posts and cambered tie beams that have arched braces cut away, suggesting a crown post roof. There is an original round-headed doorway on the ground floor. Inside, the ceiling beams are flat, and the bridging joists are chamfered. Mullion slots can be seen in the jetty bressumer, and the floors are made of herringbone brick. A copy of a will in the current owner's possession indicates that the cottage was owned by Samuel Hudson on 6th June 1629. It is possibly the crosswing of a former larger house.
