Description

Ye Old Moot Hall is a notable small building from the 15th century, located on Cross Street. It has two storeys and attics, featuring a cross wing at the north end that is timber-framed and plastered, with tiled roofs. The timber framing is fully exposed on the front. The upper storey of the cross wing projects on curved brackets and includes a picturesque oriel window with seven lights, topped by a pent roof. There is another oriel window on the west side of the cross wing's upper storey.

A central paved passageway separates the cross wing from the main block, featuring an original four-centred archway and an original planked oak door with strap hinges. The main block has a two-storey bay window with four lights and a small gable above, which is adorned with decorated barge boards and fascia. The gables of both the cross wing and main block have weathered plaster fanlight treatments.

Inside, the building retains many significant features from the 15th to 18th centuries. The ground floor of the cross wing has two original blocked doorways leading to the central passage, an original fireplace with remnants of a mural painting of the Royal Arms of James I above it, and some panelling. The ground floor of the main block includes some 18th-century features and a good corner cupboard. Although it is mistakenly referred to as "Ye Old Moot Hall"—which was actually located on Market Hill—it may have served as the Guildhall for the weavers. Photographs of the building can be found in the National Monuments Record.
