Description
This barn, located to the west of Scotland Place in Stoke by Nayland, dates from the late 16th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and is weatherboarded, featuring a main roof covered in corrugated asbestos and a full-height porch on the east side that has plain tiles. The barn is aisled and consists of four bays, with the original porch entry situated in the second bay from the south. The aisle walls display good close studding, and the wall-plates feature edge halved and bridled scarf joints.
The trusses include main posts with marked jowls, shallow arched braces leading to slightly cambered tie-beams, and distinctive arched passing braces connecting the tie-beams to the outer walls. Notably, the two trusses on each side of the porch do not have passing braces on the entry side. The roof is supported by clasped purlins and arched windbraces.
