Description

Hill House is a house dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, with later 19th-century extensions to the north. It is constructed of painted gault brick, with a hipped grey slate roof and off-centre and rear chimneystacks. The two-storey facade has a three-window range of small-paned vertically sliding sash windows, each with a gauged brick arch. Shutters are fitted to the windows, except for the first-floor centre window, which has an elegant cast iron balcony. A central tent porch made of lead, with scalloped decoration, is supported by three elaborate openwork cast iron columns, and features a 20th-century glazed door. Notable internal features include 18th and 19th-century fire surrounds to most rooms, characterised by moulded decoration with fluted pilasters, swags, urns and paterae; moulded cast iron hob and basket grates are present, with only one main room lacking an early surround. Stick balusters are found on both the main and servants' stairs.
