Description
The Malthouse and premises occupied by W A Church (Bures) Ltd is a 16th to 17th century timber-framed and plastered house with exposed timber-framing, located on the south-east side of High Street in Bures St Mary. The building was renovated in the 20th century. The ground storey at the south-west end is faced with brick and colourwashed. It has two storeys and cellars, with the upper storey jettied across the entire front, supported by carved brackets that still show remains of carved capitals. The north-east end features a bressummer that is elaborately carved with oak leaves, figures of men and beasts, and coats of arms. The south-west end displays exposed joists. There are five windows, each with two-light leaded casements, and the roofs are tiled.
Adjoining the house at the south-west end is a malthouse built in the 18th century, constructed of red and blue brick and designed in a U-shaped plan. This structure also has two storeys and a basement, featuring centre hung pivot windows. Its roofs are tiled, with seven dormers on the south-west side and four on the north-east. The wings of the malthouse have been extended in the centre.
