Description

The main range of the Royal Hospital School, encompassing the assembly hall, dining room, gymnasium, administrative, and teaching accommodation, was constructed between 1925 and 1933 by Buckland and Heywood. The building is built of red brick with stone dressings, and features rusticated block pilaster strips to the quoins. The roof is covered in interlocking Mediterranean-style tiles with hipped roofs and decorative eaves cornices. It is a large-scale, axial composition with the principal view overlooking the Stour estuary to the south. The style is Neo-Georgian, incorporating features reminiscent of the Neo-Wren manner. The majority of the building is two storeys high, with the wings having tall windows to the south. The fenestration consists mainly of small-paned, vertically sliding sash windows. Each wing includes three angled bays with parapets and hipped roofs, featuring architraved central windows topped with pediments on console brackets, and doorways with double doors positioned beneath these windows. The inner returns of the wings include a tetrastyle entrance portico leading to the dining hall and gymnasium, featuring podia, figured pediments, and a cupola. Venetian windows are located on first-floor balconies above open arcades. A tall, six-stage clock tower, inspired by St Vedast, Foster Lane, City of London, rises from the center, with paired pilasters flanking alcoves displaying arcaded treatment in diminishing stages. A giant tetrastyle portico in a modified Corinthian style forms the main south entrance. To the north, the wings create an E-shaped plan with arcaded courts and tetrastyle porticoed wings with open upper loggias. A giant central portico serves as the main north entrance. The Royal Hospital School, founded for the sons of seafarers around 1712, relocated to this site in 1933, thanks to the generosity of Gifford Sherman Reade, a former resident of Holbrook House who emigrated to New Zealand and left a bequest of money and land to the Royal Navy. The school is situated within landscaped grounds, forming a garden village setting, and the buildings remain in excellent external condition, with the exception of new blocks within the front courtyards of the main range. Staff accommodation lines Stutton Road, forming a semi-circle in front of the north entrance. To the south are ten large pupil accommodation houses, and to the southwest is Nelson House. The chapel stands to the west, and a terrace and parade ground to the south. Holbrook House and the Infirmary are located to the northwest. The quality of materials and workmanship is high, with great attention to detail evident throughout. The spire of the main range is a prominent landmark visible from a considerable distance.
