Description
Boxted Hall is a large 16th-century timber-framed house set on a moated site, featuring exposed timber-framing and brick nogging. Built by William Poley to replace an earlier residence that had been the home of the Poley family since the 14th century, it is surrounded by a well-maintained moat and stands within a 90-acre park. The house has two storeys and attics. The west block has a significantly altered front with three gables and a five-window range of double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The first-storey windows beneath the outer gables are three-light, while the ground storey features three-windowed brick bays. A porch projects from the centre. The east front has an eight-window range of double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The east wing extends to the north and includes three-light windows with pilasters and open pediments. The roofs are tiled, featuring several hipped dormers and original chimney stacks with two, three, and four octagonal shafts on rectangular bases.
