Description

The barn at Old Hall Farm is a Grade II listed structure. It originated in the 13th century as the south barn, which was later extended in the 16th century, while the north-west barn was added in the 18th century. The roofs were removed in the 20th century. The building features weatherboard cladding over a timber frame, with a gambrel corrugated iron roof on the south barn and a gabled corrugated iron roof on the north-west barn. The south barn consists of eight aisled bays with two threshing floors, while the north-west barn, which is at right angles to the south barn, has six bays and a central threshing floor. There are plank double doors leading to two gabled porches on the south side, and a lean-to roof over the east porch of the north-west barn, which is adjacent to a 19th-century outshut on the south.

Inside, the north-west barn features vertical studding with mid rails and jowled storey posts that include bracing and 19th-century knee braces tied to the beams. The south barn has 16th-century vertical studding with mid rails and curved wall bracing at the gable ends, along with jowled 16th-century aisle posts that have cranked and arched bracing to the tie beams and arcade plates. The west end of the south barn contains three 13th-century bays with unjowled aisle posts and lateral bracing to the arcade plates, all made with lighter timber. The assembly of the aisles is reversed.
