Description

Brent Eleigh Hall is a distinguished stuccoed building that features 18th-century external elements and possibly incorporates an earlier structure. It is situated on elevated ground to the north of the village, adjacent to the Church of St Mary the Virgin. The hall has two storeys and attics. The south front, believed to have been added in the early part of the 19th century, includes splayed bay fronted side wings, each with three windows, and a sub-basement. It also features a central hexastyle Tuscan portico with plain columns and a pediment that has an oval light with radial glazing bars in the tympanum. The outer bays of the portico are blocked and each contains one window range. The north front has a window arrangement of 1:6:1, while the east front has eight windows. All the windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The central part of the north front, which has four windows and a central niche with a figure, slightly projects forward and is topped with a pediment that displays a carved coat of arms in the tympanum, with pilasters separating the outer windows. The doorway was added by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1933-34, during which he made some alterations and additions to the house. Inside, there is a fine 18th-century staircase.
