Description

BRENT ELEIGH HALL ROAD 1. 5377 Brent Eleigh Hall TL 94 NW 36/174 23.1.58 I 2. A fine stuccoed building with C18 external features possibly incorporating an earlier core. It stands on high ground to the north of the village next to the Church of St Mary the Virgin. Two storeys and attics. The south front is said to have been added in the early part of the C19 comprising splayed bay fronted side wings each of 3 window range and a sub-basement, and a central hexastyle Tuscan portico with plain columns and a pediment with an oval light with radial glazing bars in the tympanum. The outer bays of the portico are blocked, each with one window range. The north front has 1:6:1 window range and the east front has 8 window range. All the windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The centre part of the north front, of 4 window range and a central niche with figure, breaks forward slightly and is pedimented with a carved coat of arms in the tympanum, the outer windows are separated by pilasters. The doorway was added by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1933-34, when he made some alterations and additions to the house. The interior has a fine C18 staircase.
