Description

Bridge Cottage is a cottage that now serves as a National Trust information centre and shop. It is likely from the late 16th century, with later alterations. The building is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a red brick stack and a thatched roof. It has one storey and an attic, with a 3½-bay frame and a lower addition on the right side. On the left, there is a board door and a bow window, with a central fire window. To the right, there is another board door and a casement window. A gabled half dormer on the right, which has a casement window, is a post-18th century addition. The central stack is complemented by a lower extension to the right that has a hipped roof. At the rear, there is a board door and a two-light window with horizontal glazing bars, along with another board door to the right and a two-light casement window nearby. There are also two gabled half dormers with casement windows. Inside, the cottage features a chamfered spine beam and cross beams with run-out stops, jowled posts, wall plates with some arch braces, and exposed wall studding. The roof has collar rafters and clasped purlins in parts. The cottage's Grade II* designation highlights its importance as part of the Flatford Mill group and its significance in the work of John Constable. It was undergoing restoration at the time of the resurvey.
